Navigating the Disability Support Pension can be difficult, here are common barriers people face in applying to get the DSP and where you can go for help.
I don’t know where to start
DSP & Me – Disability Resources Centre (drc.org.au)
This guide takes you step by step through what you need to know before applying for a DSP, so you understand the requirements and have the best chance of making a successful application if you are eligible. Note – You cannot work more than 15 hours per week before accessing the DSP (unless in an ADE). This is regardless of how much you earn.
You will not receive any DSP if you earn over a certain amount – $2332.00 for a single person over 21.

I need help filling out the form
A friend or support worker can help you fill in the form if you are unable to do so. The best way is online via the MyGov App, where your claim can be tracked.
Here is a link to the PDF form if you wish to print it: https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/sites/default/files/2023-05/sa466-2305en-f.pdf
You can get Centrelink to post one to you if needed.
You can also walk into a Centrelink branch and ask for help. They will need to become a ‘nominee’ to be able to assist with the report and if you need continued support.
If you have a mental health disability, Flourish Australia may be able to assist you in applying for the DSP https://www.flourishaustralia.org.au/how-can-we-help/i-would-help
Advocacy for Inclusion may be able to help you if you have a barrier filling in the form because of your disability.
I had a claim, but it was rejected
Social Security Law can help you with Centrelink problems if you are living in the ACT. If you appeal within 13 weeks of the decision and your appeal is successful, you can receive back pay from the time you claimed the DSP.

I need to get medical evidence
The best way is to talk to your regular GP. The medical evidence needs to write in a specific way for the best chance to get on the DSP. You can use the information on page 12 – 14 of the DSP & Me document or the below form your doctor to fill out.
It is a good idea to bring a friend, family member or someone your trust with you to your appointment. They can support you to speak up for yourself and remember to ask for what you need. Evidence you submit needs to be less then 2 years old.
