What: Advocacy for Inclusion invite our members and friends to join us for a member forum and briefing on two important Federal consultations on the future of advocacy and the reform of the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act.

Where: MS Teams – register here: https://events.humanitix.com/afi-member-forum-advocacy

When: 12.00 – 2pm on Thursday 4 September 2025 via Teams

Essential background:

The Federal Government is conducting two important and far-reaching consultations which will shape disability rights and advocacy services for many years to come.

These are the design of a new Commonwealth individual disability advocacy program which is being conducted in conjunction with the Disability Advocacy Network of Australia and a review of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA). Both stem from recommendations by the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability while the Federal Government has also committed to review and modernise the DDA.

Your invited to join in and tell us:

  • What do you want from disability advocacy in the ACT? What’s working? What’s missing?
  • What should advocacy look like and how should it be organised? What do we want to tell the Federal Government and how do we keep ensure advocacy is strong, consumer controlled and works for you?
  • What issues need time and attention in the ACT?  NDIS, transport, housing, education, health access, planning and infrastructure, employment, income support or even climate change and digital transformations?
  • What are the most pressing areas of discrimination you experience every day?
  • How can we improve discrimination protections?
  • Is the DDA useable and effective?  What might improve it?

What will happen? Your feedback will help us shape a Statement of Consumer Expectations for the future of advocacy in the ACT as well as shape our advocacy priorities. They will also inform a comprehensive submission to the Federal Disability Discrimination Act Consultation which closes on 24 October.  Plus it’s a chance for you to hear about AFI’s current advocacy priorities and projects.

Guest presenters and other details will be announced closer to the event
