AFI has made a submission to the Standing Committee on Economics, Industry and Recreation Inquiry into barriers and opportunities for participation in community sports in the ACT. Our submission points out that community sport and recreation represent fundamental aspects of social inclusion and human rights for people with disability yet remain significantly under-invested compared to that applied to employment services or elite sport programs. This submission supports more investment in both mainstream and disability specific programs, infrastructure and opportunities at the grassroots level as well as a focus on genuine inclusion for children and young people. We also call for work to enhance and embed sporting opportunities within settings where people with disabilities are gathered such as rehabilitation. The submission was also endorsed by ACTCOSS, HCCA and ACTDSID. You can download it below or view submissions on the Inquiry website (ours is number 140): Inquiry into barriers and opportunities for participation in community sports in the ACT – ACT Legislative Assembly.
