AFI has made a submission to the Your Say consultation on the expansion of e-scooters in the ACT. In our submission, which was endorsed by ACTCOSS and Living Streets Canberra, we acknowledge the active travel opportunities and environmental gains of micro-mobility devices but point out some of the concerns raised by people with disability about collisions and near miss events as well as scooters being left across pathways impeding access. We point out that Canberra’s e-scooter regime requires improved infrastructure and signage, user and driver education, as well as expanded rule and legal enforcement prior to any expansion of them. If these measures are unsuccessful, we suggest restrictions on the speed and availability of e-scooters may be needed.
